Benefiting our Community
The Free Day of Yoga benefits our community at large and us as teachers in a number of ways:

  • People who have never tried yoga can try it, for free.
  • Existing students can try new classes, teachers, and studios to broaden their exposure.
  • Participants travel to Austin from all over Texas, expanding our yoga community.
  • It raises the visibility of our teachers and studios.
  • It gives teachers exposure to a large number of new students (some classes have as many as 100 participants!).
  • It gives teachers the opportunity to give back to our community.
  • It showcases the tremendous diversity of teaching styles, quality, and talent in our city.
  • It builds community between and among teachers and students.
  • It's fun!

We offer our annual events at no charge to those attending. The board of the Free Day of Yoga: Mary Esther Middleton, Russell Burns and Marlene Fridley. We thank you for your generous donations!

Free Day of Yoga was created in 1999 by Donna Belk; Charles MacInerney, Ellen Smith, Sharon Moon, and a host of wonderful volunteers. The concept has blossomed into an event with thousands of participants each year.

This event would not be possible without the generosity of the Austin Yoga Teachers and the enthusiasm of Austin yogis and yoginis in our town.
